Posts Tagged ‘drawing ink’

I abandoned my usual watercolours this week in favour of playing with inks instead.  I’ve returned to a style that I favoured a lot about half a decade ago, and enjoying it so much that I’m wondering why I stopped!

It’s very simple, but I like the way it quickly becomes dramatic.

I do have a bit of a bone to pick with Winsor & Newton though: that, above, is no way ‘scarlet’ in my book.  It’s bright pink!  I started working using black ink this morning but didn’t get a chance to finish anything off, so here’s a sneak peek for now.

Hopefully I’ll have more to reveal next Sunday :)

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, but I rarely throw anything away.  My collection of drawing inks is a really good example, in that photo above only two bottles were bought last year – the rest I’ve had since I was 18.  That’s over twelve years, and they weren’t new when I got them either (they were given to me by my art teacher when I was in sixth form).  I did actually have a bit of a cull this time last year and threw out the ones which had completely dried up, or that I couldn’t open, but the rest are still here.

On Sunday I went to the art shop and my fella treated me to a new set of inks, and oh my they are lovely.

Let’s have a closer look at them shall we?

They’re Winsor & Newton so they’re good quality inks, and as an added bonues the boxes are gorgeous!  (The labels on the bottles themselves are also lovely).

Last year I did treat myself to another Winsor & Newton set, which contained (amongst other things) four bottles of ink.

I have to admit I’d forgotten about those when I was checking my ink supplies.  Oops.  Anyway it does mean that my ink collection now looks like this:

Is it really bad that I take an obscene amount of pleasure in just staring at the pretty boxes?  Still, as pretty as they are they’re made to be used, so use them I will.  I had a bit of a play and did a quick (and very bad) sketch of Tanah Lot, and I think I’ll have a bash at some other views later this week.
