Posts Tagged ‘ready for an adventure’

I’m a bit tardy today, but better late than never!  I’m late because I decided to do a sketch of the view out of my studio window… and it took a bit longer than I’d planned.

It does no justice to the actual view, which is far more colourful in the summer.  A riot of purple blooms on the clematis (Clematis viticellaÉtoile Violette‘), vibrant red from the Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, and the lush greenery provided by ferns just outside my window.  Perhaps this time next year I’ll have improved my drawing skills so I can provide a better view of the summer!

I seem to have picked an inspiring word because we’ve got more participants this week than we’ve had for a while!  Pop along to their blogs and see what they’ve come up with:

I’m tagging Peggy to choose the next word, so make sure to visit her blog on Monday to see what she’s chosen!

PS. Jenna, I had a tinker with my scanner settings and it seems to be sorting the colour out itself for now, yay!

This is a bit of an apologetic post… Emily over at Ready for an Adventure chose this week’s word, and whilst I did say I would take part I’ve completely drawn a blank as to what to write!  I’ve been wracking my brains and can’t come up with anything, so I’m afraid I’m just going to have to apologise and shamefacedly slink away.  Sorry Emily!

On the bright side it’s been lovely to read Emily’s post, and Jenna over at Timballoo has done a lovely sketch for her contribution so if I were you I’d pop over to their blogs and have a look.

Emily has tagged me to choose the next word, so stop by on Monday to see what it is.

Emily over at Ready for An Adventure chose this week’s word, pop over to her blog to see who else is taking part.

It’s been a gloriously sunny week, too sunny really as we’re now officially in drought conditions and there’s a hosepipe ban imminent.  Still, we mustn’t complain too much as the sunshine is nice.  I’ve been making the most of the weather and have pretty much ignored my studio this week in favour of sitting outside in the garden either working on cross stitch or doing some knitting.  There has also been some gardening (a very little), but mainly I’ve been enjoying the view…

There’s lots in bloom at the moment, mainly tulips and daffodils…

…but also anemone blanda and some heartsease (which was my dad’s favourite flower)

I’m particularly in love with a slightly different type of tulip this year, Tulip turkestanica

It’s a multi-headed variety which has incredibly delicate flowers.  The foliage is also less bulky than the usual tulip leaves and seems, thus far, to be of no interest to slugs and snails.  Result!

It’s sunny again today and as I’ve just spent the morning seeing my dentist (again…) I’m now going to retire to the garden to bask in the sunshine while doing some more cross stitch.

Thanks for choosing such a seasonal word, Emily!

Due to being a busy bee at work this week I’m a bit behind with blogging, and so despite the best of intentions my Weekword post is going to be a very short one!

Of all the journeys I’ve taken, probably the most fun has been had riding in a bajaj while in Indonesia.  They’re little three-wheeled vehicles which are very rickety, and very noisy.  They’re great for getting around Jakarta because they’re small and the drivers can nip in and out of little spaces in the traffic, but it does rather feel as though you’re taking your life in your hands!  If you’d like to see what a bajaj ride is like, click here to view a little video clip I filmed while we were out there.

Like I said, I left this to the last minute so my first job this morning was to grab a dip pen, some ink and a brush and try to whip up a wee sketch of a bajaj.  Job done, and that my friends is my very hasty journey Weekword!

Thanks for visiting, and please visit the other Weekword participants to see what they’ve posted this week :)

I’m tagging Jen at Timballoo to choose the next word, so please visit her blog on Monday to find out what it is!

This week’s Weekword is resolution, and it was chosen by Emily over at Ready for an Adventure.  If you go and visit her blog you’ll be able to see what she’s written, as well as a list of the other participants.

There are, according to Google, twelve different meanings of the word ‘resolution’ – I decided to go with the first one:

A firm decision to do or not to do something

I don’t think I’ve made a new year’s resolution since I was at school.  I don’t see why a resolution made on the 1st January should be any more effective than a resolution made at any other time of the year.  I do make resolutions in general though, and if I had to pick three for the coming year this is what they’d be.

1. Be more organised

Fairly straightforward, and applies to all aspects of my life from gardening to domestic chores to working in my studio.  I don’t keep a work diary, which is a result of having such regular clients.  However I do think I might benefit from having some sort of schedule for outside work hours.  I’ll be looking at this over the next couple of days while the idea is still fresh in my mind.

2. Stop procrastinating

I’m a devil for putting things off, and that can make me my own worst enemy.  I’m actually quite determined to work on this because I think it would force me to be more productive/creative.  I’m forever stashing away bits and pieces because they might come in useful, or I just can’t bear to throw them away… which leads to the most amazing amount of crap littering the house and studio.  From now on I’m going to try and use things up as I acquire them.  Offcuts of paper?  Turn them into a miniature book, a collage, a gift tag, anything, straight away.  Leftovers of yarn?  Look at them seriously and decide if they’re actually long enough to be worth keeping.  If so put them away neatly in a bag rather than leaving them all over the place.  Interesting articles?  Clip them out of the magazine or print them off from the web and stick them in your scrapbook.  Don’t leave umpteen tabs open in Firefox just because you’ll come back to browse them eventually, and don’t leave old magazines piled up all over the house.

3. Start drawing more

I lost my sketch mojo several months ago.  No idea where it went, but I suspect it’s still somewhere in Orkney waiting for me to return!  I kept a sketch blog a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it, and I did find that drawing things on an almost daily basis improved my skills (well it would, wouldn’t it?  Practice makes perfect and all that!).  I’ve completely fallen out of the habit, and it’s become a vicious circle: I want to draw more, but I lack the confidence so I don’t do it.  If I don’t draw then I won’t improve, and nor will my confidence.  I’m planning to take part in Illustration Friday next year so I’ve got a couple of weeks to bully myself into drawing more and working the kinks out.

A list of all this week’s participants is given at the end of this post

I must admit that I’ve rather overstretched myself this week (turns out that blogging regularly is almost a full-time occupation, who knew?!) and thus come to Weekword a little lacking in inspiration.  Which, thankfully, made me think.

“Never judge a book by its cover” – that’s what we’re told, and it’s damn good advice because if I judged books by their covers I’d never have read some of my favourite novels.

Take this one, for instance.  Thornyhold by Mary Stewart.  At first glance it looks like just another run of the mill, insipid romance novel.  Chocolate box cover art, totally uninspiring.  There is romance in this book, but it’s interwoven very skillfully with a tale of magical realism.  It’s actually rather fab, and although I can’t think what sort of cover art would do it justice, it’s certain that the current cover falls short.

One of my other favourites is The Spellkey Trilogy by Ann Downer (I actually have two copies of this, one copy of the original first part, and a copy of the complete trilogy).

I adore The Spellkey, but the cover art is dreadful and does the book(s) no favours whatsoever.  These books have been a source of inspiration for years (so much so that I ended up with a commission from the author!), and it’s a tragedy that the covers don’t reflect the genius within.

So there we go.  Two of my favourite novels, and a very rambling post!

Thanks for taking the time to visit my blog for this week’s Weekword.  Don’t forget to pop by and see all the other participants too!

I’m nominating Sally at Sow & Sew to pick the next word (sorry Sally!), so please visit her blog on Monday to find out what the next word is.

First of all I want to say a HUGE thank you to all those who took part in this month’s Crafty Photo Scavenger Hunt.  I really enjoyed hosting it, but was very nervous that people wouldn’t want to play – so THANK YOU! :)

As promised I have perused all the entries and chosen my own favourites for each category (no prizes this month I’m afraid, although I may try and rustle up a small something for December…).

Inspiration

My favourite in this category was Magie’s teacups.  Not so much for the photograph (although it is pretty!), but for the idea that these vintage cups would have so many stories to tell if only they could speak!

Something I made

I adore these prints by Jennifer over at Architette.  So much so that I might have to steal borrow the idea ;)

Motifs: Stripes

Hands down favourite for this category was Jeneveve.  I love the clean lines of this photograph.

Comfort

I was torn between two photos for this category, but in the end Rachael won my heart with her cosy slipper socks (I have a real weakness for socks…).  Close runner up was Magie and her beautiful stove.

Texture

The final category, and Sally from Diario won me over with this beautiful shot.

Honourable mentions go to Emily, who has the best dressing gown ever, and Lisa for her photo of the horseman of the apocalypse Rory (when I first looked I thought she was entering him as something she’d made, but on closer inspection it turned out to be his pyjamas!).

Thanks again for playing along, and I’m already looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with for December!
